WAE Technologies Co-Creation Space in Bad Dürkheim

WAE Technologies Deutschland GmbH with new headquarters

UK-based company WAE Technologies opened its new Germany site in Bad Dürkheim, Rhineland-Palatinate, on May 11, 2023. Launched in 2010 as a spin-off from Williams Grand Prix Engineering – the company behind Formula 1 team Williams – WAE quickly established itself as a leader in electrification and energy storage for cars, scooters, motorcycles and, not least, racing cars: the startup equips the entire all-electric Formula-E racing series with rechargeable batteries.

In 2022, Australian mining company Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) acquired the company, expanding its research into advanced, zero-emission powertrains for commercial vehicles. Fortescue Metals Group is one of the world’s largest iron ore mining companies. In the future, their heavy-duty dump trucks could be equipped with emission-free drives developed in Bad Dürkheim. Uwe Hotz, founder and head of strategy at WAE Technologies Deutschland GmbH, has ambitious goals for this: By 2025, the number of employees is to be expanded from six to 30. To achieve this, the company wants to invest a seven-figure sum in the Bad Dürkheim site. The advantages of the location are ideal, says Hotz, given the proximity to the universities of Darmstadt, Stuttgart and Karlsruhe and to the automotive industry.

Cooperation with KST Motorenversuch

It also seems ideal that WAE has rented a 280 sqm office at KST Motorenversuch. KST has also geared itself to the topics of electrification and hydrogen and has set up corresponding test benches. Should WAE build prototypes, they can be tested directly on site.

Magility Managing Director Dr. Michael W. Müller attended the opening as a KST Advisory Board member. “It will be exciting to continue to follow the further development in the use of hydrogen, especially in the highly demanding commercial vehicle sector. As a long-standing partner of KST, we at Magility GmbH will of course stay very close to the latest developments,” said Müller.
